How were the mummies preserved? The Lemon Grove mummies were preserved by dry air. Because the dry air has no moisture, there can be no bacteria and that cannot decay the body. It was said that Indians buried put there dead bodies in a cave, and there is dry air in caves.

The Lemon Grove Girl was found curled up. You can see parts of her body, like her legs and head, and for such an old mummy it is in good condition.
The mummy was preserved accidentally. The mummy was probably murdered, and mummified on its own. Because she was covering her head with her arms and was curled up, she was possible trying to hide.
In the picture, the mummy's hands are over her head like she was trying to protect herself from a murderer or an earthquake.
